Gia lam is located outside Hanoi in Vietnam, and is a new urban zone for 60,00 people. The master plan has been developed in close cooperation with a local partner, Vinaconex and the engineering firm Buro Happold.
Particular attention has been paid to preserving the landscape character of the site, its distinctive urban environments and its ecological base. An analysis of the area's topography and climate formed the basis for the main layout, which accommodates and exploits the strong winds and high rainfall that occur during the monsoon season. The city streets are mainly oriented east - west, which reduces the number of exposed facades to low sun angles, thereby reducing the need for cooling of the dwellings in the strong tropical sun.
The proposal includes a centrally located harbour basin to collect excess rainwater for reuse, while providing the opportunity to create an environment with new forms of living and activity by the water. The water will be used, among other things, to cool the new building structures, which will thus be able to achieve good indoor climate conditions without the high energy consumption. Most of the water in Vietnam's rivers and lakes is polluted, so a water purification strategy combined with sound long-term planning could help set new standards for water management in Vietnam.
In an effort to strengthen the university and research environment, a campus is planned around the harbour basin, and green production. From here there is close access to the old city centre and close access to the airport and infrastructure.
The project, developed in close collaboration between the team's players and developers, will be a landmark sustainable district in Vietnam, demonstrating internationally how functionality and sustainability go hand in hand, creating a good environment for social and local life.
