Vordingborg Municipality has awarded the Vordingborg Municipality Building Prize 2013 to the building by Udbetaling Danmark.
The 6,600 m2 administration building was developed and designed by Mikkelsen Architects and is the daily workplace of over 200 employees who administer public services.
On Thursday 3 October, Mikkelsen Architects was awarded the Vordingborg Municipality Building Prize for their work with Udbetaling Danmark in Vordingborg. The objective has been to develop a building that creates an optimal environment for a modern work community, characterised by professional exchange and synergy. To optimise daylight intake, the flexible workplaces are located along the facades. The building itself appears as a whole that continuously relates to its surroundings. The result is a sustainable administration building with varied and clearly defined levels of public access.
Niels Thorup, architect maa, from Mikkelsen Architects has been in charge of the project and explains the background of the ideas behind the chosen solutions: "The workplaces are distributed over three floors and three building volumes, which are linked by a vertical movement space. Just as in our work on Rambøll's headquarters in Ørestaden, in Vordingborg we have created a building where the central atrium forms the heart, leading people and activities out into the building. The aim has been to create a sustainable, dynamic and vibrant workplace where employees and users meet and inspire each other, while at the same time it is easy to get an overview of the activities taking place in the building. In addition, we have ensured a clear separation of public, semi-public and private functions, as the work with sensitive information also requires."
As the client, ATP set high standards for sustainability parameters such as indoor climate, integration of daylight, employee comfort and minimal maintenance requirements. This has resulted, among other things, in a specially developed window element in which gold-bronze-coloured bay windows function as small, local double facades with integrated solar shading. In combination with the grey/yellow brick facades, the domes give Udbetaling Danmark in Vordingborg a Nordic and sculptural look.
In the motivation for the building award, it was highlighted that: "The building is located in the context of commercial and institutional buildings along the railway terrain, which opens up to the west and the open countryside. A clear and comprehensible approach (... makes the building appear, in both its exterior and interior, bright and friendly, and is well arranged around a central open stairwell with workplaces for more than a few hundred employees."

Udbetaling Danmark
Udbetaling Danmark is a public authority run by the ATP Group. The authority is responsible for the payment of a number of public benefits to citizens. These tasks were previously the responsibility of the country's 98 municipalities. Udbetaling Danmark was formed when KL and the government reached an agreement in June 2010 to merge parts of the objective case processing in five centres. Vordingborg is one of these centres.
