MIKKELSEN ARKITEKTER A/S
Mikkelsen Architects has won the competition for the extension and conversion of the historic building at the corner of Valkendorfsgade and Købmagergade.
The existing building from 1883 is located in the historic part of Copenhagen K, and today houses a shop with entrance and facade facing Købmagergade and commercial premises on the floors with access from Valkendorfsgade. The property will be transformed both externally and internally and complemented by an extension, an infill, in the existing courtyard facing Valkendorfsgade.
The extension facing Valkendorfsgade fits into the architectural context with a modern facade that reinforces the street's identity as a historic and at the same time modern urban street. The materials and architectural effects of the existing building and the extension form a whole that balances the meeting of new and old. The extension appears open with large windows and French balconies facing Valkendorfsgade, which help to let light and life flow between the city and the dwelling. Throughout the day, the extension will add a varied play of light and shade, textural contrasts and characterful details to the existing streetscape.
