Østre Kapel in Sydhavnen - new contract won!

Mikkelsen Architects, together with VITA Engineers and Zoffmannholm Landscape Architects, will be responsible for the transformation of Østre Kapel at Vestre Kirkegård in Copenhagen's Sydhavn.

The chapel will be transformed into a modern theater and culture house, help strengthen the culture in the district and become a new gathering place for the area and visitors to the cemetery. The goal is to create a theater and culture house that appears open and inviting during both day and evening hours, taking into account that Vestre Cemetery is also an active burial ground that requires space for contemplation and reflection.

Today, the uninsulated and run-down building houses Sydhavn's Theater during the summer months, but Østre Kapel will become a cultural beacon all year round with performances, cultural experiences and social events.

The East Chapel at Vestre Cemetery dates from 1913 and was designed by Holger Jacobsen, the cemetery architect of the City of Copenhagen at the time. He was also responsible for the Royal Danish Theatre's stage 'Stærekassen'. The East Chapel building is part of Copenhagen's rich architectural history and Mikkelsen Arkitekter is excited about this opportunity to preserve and transform a beautiful part of Danish cultural heritage.

Mikkelsen Arkitekter is strongly committed to transformation to both ensure a very low climate footprint for our buildings and bring our shared cultural heritage into a new future. The project will have a strong emphasis on sustainability with a focus on recycling and upcycling of materials.

The project is financed by the municipality, the A.P. Møller Foundation and Lokale og Anlægsfonden.
