Groundbreaking for the Lash Miller Extension, University of Toronto
Construction of Lash Miller extension underway
On November 7th, Mikkelsen Arkitekter participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for our extension for the Lash Miller Chemical Building at the University of Toronto, Canada.
The ceremony, attended by the client group, consultants, contractor and local stakeholders, marked the start of the execution phase of the building, which will house the Acceleration Consortium (AC) and provide the Department of Chemistry with state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities.
The project is being carried out in close collaboration with client University of Toronto and our local consultant Cumulus Architects, Arup Engineering, mcCallumSather as laboratory consultant, Urbacon as contractor and a number of sub-consultants.
Launched in 2021, the Acceleration Consortium (AC) merges artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, engineering and chemistry to accelerate the design and discovery of new materials. Using self-driving labs powered by artificial intelligence, AC works to discover materials needed to build an overall more sustainable future.
"The research being conducted in the Acceleration Consortium is taking a cutting-edge approach to materials discovery. Now, more than ever, we need such new technologies to help solve the world's most existential and difficult problems, from climate change to plastic pollution to cancer," said Melanie Woodin, Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto. "This addition is truly about advancing the university's mission of research and teaching excellence."
Mikkelsen Architects is the lead architect on the project and looks forward to delivering the addition to the University of Toronto campus in the spring of 2026.
