WINNER! Archello Awards 2023 Healthcare Building of the Year

Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen is the winner of both the jury vote and the public vote.

Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen (SDCC) is Northern Europe's largest center for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. The center is located at Herlev Hospital and specializes in outpatient treatment, research and prevention of diabetes as well as training of healthcare professionals.

SDCC appears as a warm and welcoming building with a strong connection to outdoor areas, giving patients and citizens a 'homely' and safe environment despite frequent or complex treatment processes. The choice of materials strives to avoid the usual hospital associations and is based on a Nordic material expression that stimulates the senses and expresses quality.

Inside on the ground floor, all communal and waiting areas have been reimagined so that the architecture itself promotes a healthy lifestyle and converts waiting time into active time around the themes of diet, exercise and education.

Mikkelsen Architects are the architects behind the building, together with VLA. STED urban and landscape architects have been responsible for the beautiful, sensory and educational outdoor areas.
