Winner of the 2022 Thin Plate Award 'Business'

We won!

Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen is again a winner, this time of the Thin Plate Award 2022 in the category 'Business'.

Mikkelsen Arkitekter is thrilled to have completed such an acclaimed and beautiful project, and we thank both our client Region Hovedstaden and our partners Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter, COWI, STED By og Landskab and HS Hansen, who was responsible for the facade and closing at SDCC.

Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen (SDCC) is Northern Europe's largest centre for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. The centre is located at Herlev Hospital and opened in November 2021. SDCC appears as a warm and welcoming building, where the choice of materials aims to avoid the usual hospital associations and is based on a Nordic material expression that stimulates the senses and helps to give patients a 'homey' and safe setting, despite frequent or complex treatment courses.

The facade aims to create a distinct identity for SDCC. Through the facade material's ability to interact with daylight, the experience of the building will change throughout the day and year. The facade, which is predominantly made of hot anodised thin sheets, is characterised by an interplay between a clear functional expression and an optimal use of daylight.

Mikkelsen Arkitekter and Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter have achieved a beautiful dialogue between the building's tight exterior plan geometry and the interior's more fluid courtyard and landscape spaces. Likewise, we have achieved a balance between relief and geometric depth in the façade. The matt anodised surface of the façade is visible both inside and out, defining an overall strong identity for the building.

The facade is a curtain-wall construction made of modular prefabricated elements, with an anodised surface, produced in a system of extruded profiles and sheet cladding.

The Thin Sheet Group is behind the architectural competition and awards the Thin Sheet Prize, with the aim of rewarding outstanding architectural use of thin sheet. The Thin Sheet Award is sponsored by the Thin Sheet Group in Denmark and is presented to the winning architectural firm behind the project.
