Energy renovation of Rødovre Library

MIKKELSEN ARKITEKTER provided architectural advice throughout the process, including construction management in a professional contract and health and safety coordination in P and B. Construction was carried out in stages, as the public library was in use during the energy renovation.

Together with the Municipality of Rødovre, MIKKELSEN ARKITEKTER has prepared a solution catalogue for energy renovation tasks in the library, focusing on indoor climate, energy, aesthetics, conservation and functionality. These issues have been budgeted, subsequently prioritised and then put out to tender.

Large parts of the technical installations have been energy renovated, including ceilings and original lighting with monastery lamps and the legendary star ceiling. The ceiling is a large and important part of the architecture of Rødovre Library. The reddish brown ceiling of perforated metal sheets is continuous throughout the ground floor and can be seen from room to room.

Rødovre Library, originally designed by Arne Jacobsen, was built in the 1960s and in 2010 decided to be protected by the Danish Agency for Culture. The library and its location as a whole are a fine example of the cultural institutions built by the welfare society.

Our task has been to carry out the energy renovation with respect and in accordance with the original architecture of the building. Selected elements of the building and interior were upgraded and highlighted so that the experience of a modern cultural centre and workplace was contemporary and optimal.

Mikkelsen Architects' advice involved a close dialogue with the Danish Agency for Cultural Heritage, due to strict restrictions on restoration, renovation and conversion.
