Facade renovation of KU 771

Computer Science Institute was built in 1939-1940 by architect Kaj Gottlob. Buildings 1, 2 and 3 are clad in Faxe limestone and it has been observed over the years that the cladding has become loose and has fallen to the ground for safety reasons. This has made it necessary to erect barriers along the buildings. Based on a thorough investigation and analysis of the condition of the building, solutions were recommended, of which the facade and windows are key elements.

Natural stone cladding:

It is our opinion that a renovation of the natural stone cladding is unavoidable. The original stone used for the facade cladding is a Faxe limestone which is no longer available in the quantities corresponding to the facade area of KU 771. A stone which appears to be Faxe limestone must therefore be found. This is considered likely, with possibilities including travertine and German limestone.

Windows:

In principle, there are 2 main options regarding windows:
1) That the ex. windows are kept and moved forward to the new natural stone level.
If it is chosen to retain and move the existing windows, the condition of the wood should be more comprehensively assessed in the next phase. A more comprehensive condition assessment will
inform decisions on this work and whether any replacements are required. Following condition assessment, any timber showing rot should be repaired where possible. Replacements should be made in the event that it is cheaper than repair. All woodwork should be stripped and painted.
2) That windows be replaced with new ones.
